Uplifting Colors

The colors one surrounds oneself with can have a definite impact on mood and consequent outlook on life. The bedroom above is one of 16 apartments that Kathleen designed for Open Arms Housing, Inc. , a housing program for homeless women who are coping with mental illness. This particular apartment was designed with colors to support someone who was experiencing depression. The bright pink and orange colors in the curtains, artwork and throw rugs were chosen as “mood lifters.” The theme of happiness and comfort is carried out in the handmade afghan at the foot of the bed.

Almost all of the furniture and decorative accessories for these apartments were obtained through donations. Each apartment is unique in its decor and incoming residents were allowed to choose the style that best suited them. To learn more about Open Arms Housing and the opportunity to donate, visit www.openarmshousing.org .

“Kathleen, Thank you so much for making my new apartment so lovely. This is the first time I have felt at home in many years.” Open Arms resident.
