It was hard to decide on the best use of this delightful basement space. The possibilities were many; separate home office, guest space, or a rental apartment.
After careful consideration of the homeowners needs it was decided to create a comfortable hotel alternative for family and visitors to the DC area. This allows for income generation when rented but also provides a private space for visiting older children and their spouses. A cozy one room space, it includes kitchen, dining, bath and two sleeping options; a Murphy bed and a futon.
Following the dictates of a small budget the owner used her Design for Change Plan and made custom curtains and pillows herself. She purchased most other furniture from thrift and consignment stores. Decorative accessories from around the world created a fun, chic apartment that feels comfortable and homey to family and out of towners. Another kind of “home away from home.”
Tip: Whether money is tight, or you just like the idea of sharing the gift of “home” with someone else, repurposing an extra room or two for use by short-term visitors to the area, can be a win-win solution.
